What is the BB1ACT part of BB1ACT Simplified ABA?

BB1ACT is part of a simple philosphy of mine that I came to after 30 or so years of overcoming challenges that many of us face in our day to day lives.

Sometimes we have goals in mind but don't know where to start. Sometimes we have lots to do but can't choose what to do first so we get stuck. Can you relate to this? I know I certainly have encountered both of these challenges and wasted time I can't get back. What I eventually came to understand is, we build better lives one simple act at a time. Sometimes the best thing to do is pick a small action and just get started. This is how we move forward and get momentum to continue to the next and the next and the next thing.

In the field of applied behavior analysis there is always something to do and lots of decisions to make. As a clinician, I need to remind myself of the same philosophy, BB1ACT, and keep things simple. We have a principle in applied behavior analysis called parsimony, which basically means, keep things simple, and we are usually looking for key variables that matter that we can modify something in the environment to make big change.

Imagine observing an adult in a care home, engage in a series of behaviors that are very difficult to manage for the staff there. Staff have tried everything to help their client. But with vary mixed results, they're tired, they're stressed and they really worry about the client and their other clients. In situations like this, as soon as they paint me the big picture, the simple thing I need to do is ask the right questions and start taking down what we call ABC data. That stands for, Antecedents, Behavior and Consequences. Basically what I'm trying to learn about is what is going on right before the Behavior happens, what the behavior itself is and looks like, and what happens after the behavior occurs, which is likely to tell us more about what the behavior is for or what it accomplishes for the person. Sometimes gathering ABC data is enough to help us find out what steps we need to take to help the client and the staff. Sometimes we need more ABC data, and other times we need further assessment. But when people are stressed, my first step is to reassure them, help is here, and if we can quickly figure this out, we may be able to make some pretty dramatic quailty of life improvements.

If you know someone who is struggling with their adult in a care home that might have some behavioral support needs, and want to help them and their staff, consider inquiring about our services.

In case you're wondering about my history working in the field of applied behavior analysis field and communities I've served here's a quick blurb below.

My background started with young kids and moved to adults for many years in care homes and extended to home based ABA services funded by insurance, then to school children on the autism specturm and related disorders, and now I'm coming back home to supporting adults in care homes. These folks are close to my heart. I'm a firm believer that everyone deserves a high quailty of life, dignity, and low barriers to accessing the world around them with as much independence as possible.

A reminder for everyone reading. When in doubt, just pick a simple action to take and take it. Get your momentum and build your better life today with simple acts and simple paths to success!
